Showcasing craftsmanship was a primary element of the design process, and coupling this spectrum with a warm color scheme creates a rustic and traditional atmosphere. Instead of the typical choice of drywall, traditional Japanese stucco walls and rustic wood finishes were used to create a more authentic dining experience. The modern design elements, such as the exposed ceiling and flooring, offer a visual contrast while maintaining a balanced budget and a more durable and easy-to-maintain restaurant.
The project, a 2,300 square foot tenant improvement of a ramen restaurant, was completed in 2015 in Houston, Texas. The design team, led by Yu-Ngok Lo, worked closely with Jinya's CEO and corporate chef to understand the restaurant's daily operation and requirements. This highly interactive process ensured that the design met the expectations of both the franchisee and the corporate Jinya brand.
The design team incorporated Jinya's ideas and belief that enjoying ramen is a ritual rather than merely a necessity. This inspiration pushed the boundaries and created a space where traditional Japanese culinary and modern dining experience interweave. Some of the design elements used in this project later became the design standard for other Jinya locations throughout the country.
The Jinya Houston design received the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contribute to quality of life improvements, and make the world a better place.
With its combination of modernity, traditionalism, and elegance, Jinya Houston sets a new standard for ramen bars, providing an efficient and comfortable dining experience while staying true to the brand's Japanese roots.
